Samuel and Thomas Jones papers, 1774-1807.

This collection consists of correspondence, a bill, an address, an apprenticeship bond, and meeting minutes primarily concerned with the Baptist faith. While Samuel and Thomas Jones resided in Philadelphia, a number of items in the collection concern Savannah. A letter from Cradock Burnell of Savannah to Thomas Jones mentions news of the family and the Baptist and Methodist Churches in Wales, as well as personal news. Also included is a bill of lading for 50 quarter casks of gunpowder shipped to John Marshall in Savannah on the schooner Polly, and a letter from Abner Davis of Montgomery County, Georgia, to Samuel Jones regarding the agricultural conditions in Georgia.

Samuel Jones was a prominent member of the Philadelphia Association and was instrumental in the founding of Brown University. He was born in 1735 and educated at Hopewell Academy. He was the pastor of the Baptist church at Pennepek in Pennsylvania for fifty-one years and conducted an academy for the education of young men.
